WHAT IS FASHION DESIGNING?
Today, we no longer wear clothes to keep ourselves covered or warm, but to express our personality and ‘attitude’. This is where the FASHION DESIGNER steps in, to help us make the correct fashion statement. Creating a style, using the right fabric, the right cut, and a good finish, the designer turns out either a singular creation (one of its kind) that may sell for a very high price or more usually, outfits that will reach a retail outlet in different sizes and colours. In certain cases, the garment may even be mass-produced for a specific market. Garments include items of regular clothing, generally western style, which are now the most popular clothes people wear worldwide. However, in India itself, there is a huge local market for Indian style designer wear such as salwar-kameez, sherwanis, ghagra-cholis, and so on. And international, as well as ‘desi’ fashion consciousness, is rampantly overwhelming today’s youth in our country! Words like Chic, Hep, Fad, Rage, Style, Vogue, Fashion, Model, Haute Couture, Designer, and many other such descriptive words have become common parlance.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
A question often asked by young people is whether they really need to be TRAINED to be a Designer. Some young people who are able to sketch well and have an interest in fashion believe that their basic talent and interest already qualifies them for the fashion industry. But fashion design is not just about sketching pretty clothes. Barring a few exceptions where talent borders on genius, it is certainly recommended that you PURSUE A PROPER COURSE IN FASHION DESIGNING. And you can do so straight after School, Higher Secondary or College. The only basic qualification required is an aptitude and inclination! If you have it in you, zoom right into the highly glitzy world of fashion and glamour – you will not regret your decision!
WHY DO YOU NEED A FORMAL TRAINING COURSE
No special basic educational qualifications are required to become a Fashion Designer. However, you do need a considerable amount of help and guidance from experts to channel your aptitude and talent to be labelled ‘designer’ material. You need to thoroughly understand the highly creative skills of combining colors, shades, designs, patterns, textures, cuts, folds, etc. to express your ideas.
If you enjoy fashion – you are looking for the right career. * If you feel you want to work under somebody, begin by taking up apprenticeship under a flourishing or well-known designer. Get some practice by working. Develop a style of your own. Then venture out independently.
* Or take up employment or garment-manufacturing unit or in an export house. There are several such units in Goa and several hundred all over India.
* Or start Freelancing for fashion houses and boutiques, right from your home.
* Self-employment by (a) opening your boutique to showcase your talent and sales or (b) a manufacturing unit or (c) an export outfit.
